On the 5th July 2014, Yorkshire welcomes the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014.
Welcome to Yorkshire came to us requiring an innovative digital strategy for the Grand Départ 2014. The official website provides essential race data to fans from all over the world. To contribute to such a prestigious, world renowned sporting event was an exciting opportunity for us sports enthusiasts here at Creative Spark.
October 2013 saw the successful initial launch of the site. We have continued our work with Welcome to Yorkshire over the past 9 months to roll out further digital strategy in the run up to the event.
Contained within the scalable online platform is an interactive map displaying the three stages of the race. The playful map invites users to view gradients throughout the routes, places of interest and local businesses. In addition, the ‘Plan your Experience’ and ‘What’s on Nearby’ features empower the user, providing everything they need to plan activities before, during and after the event.
Fine-tuned interactions, animations and hyperlapse videos showcase the stunning scenery of the route and provide an engaging user experience. Interactive elements are enhanced via the social hub. Enthusiasts can share self generated content within the online community such as race day experiences, points of interest and scenic photography. The site will grow and evolve with fresh spectator created content, increasing repeat visits. The social hub will evolve into a ‘Look back Wall’ following the event, enhancing the legacy element of the site.
The results speak for themselves, with 17.25million pageviews and 4.9million visits since launch. The results didn’t go unnoticed, with the website winning a prestigious Big Chip 2014 Award.
